The problem the catalog solves
A customer asks “how much?” so you send a product link. They leave WhatsApp, open a browser, wait for the page, get distracted, and never return. Every exit from the conversation is a real leak in your sales path.
The catalog puts the product itself — image, price, description — inside WhatsApp. The customer browses, picks and adds to a cart without leaving the screen.
What the catalog actually does
- Shows products inside the chat with an image, price and short description.
- Single or multi-product messages — send one item or a curated set based on what was asked.
- A cart inside WhatsApp — the customer adds several items and sends them as one order.
- Inventory sync if your store is connected, so out-of-stock items disappear.
What it does not do — the part nobody mentions
The catalog is not a payment gateway. The customer sends you an order; you collect payment outside it — transfer, payment link, or cash on delivery.
- No in-WhatsApp payment in the Egyptian market so far.
- Limited product count. It suits dozens of products, not thousands.
- Every product is reviewed by Meta. Restricted items get rejected, and repeated rejections affect the account.
- No filtering or search like a real store. Customers can only browse.
When the catalog wins, and when a link wins
- Catalog wins under ~100 products where the decision is visual and quick — food, clothing, accessories, service packages.
- Link wins with hundreds of products, when customers filter by size and colour, or when online payment is central.
- Both together is the ideal: catalog for bestsellers, link for the rest of the store.
Setting it up properly
- Square, clean images. Images get cropped in the preview — anything near the edges is lost.
- Names that describe, not decorate. “Men’s cotton t-shirt — navy” beats “Summer look”.
- Current prices. A stale price in the catalog generates a complaint, not a sale.
- Review rejections. Usually the cause is promotional text baked into an image, or an exaggerated description.
Tying it to automation
On its own the catalog is a static display. What turns it into sales is making it part of an automated flow: the customer asks about a category, the bot sends matching catalog items, and a reminder follows if nothing was bought within a day. That is the same logic behind abandoned cart recovery.
And if your store runs on Shopify or WooCommerce, connecting the store to WhatsApp keeps the catalog and stock updated on their own.
