The core difference: a one-way channel versus a conversation
SMS delivers a notification. WhatsApp opens a conversation. That difference is not a detail — it determines what each channel is good for.
If a customer receives a question by SMS, they usually will not reply. On WhatsApp the reply is one tap away, and you can continue in the same thread.
A practical comparison
- Reach: SMS works on any phone, even offline. WhatsApp needs internet and the app installed — true for the overwhelming majority in Egypt.
- Delivery and reads: WhatsApp shows delivered and read. SMS shows sent, and after that you are blind.
- Format: SMS is text only, 160 characters (fewer in Arabic). WhatsApp takes images, files and buttons.
- Trust: your verified business name shows with a picture on WhatsApp. SMS arrives from a number or a sender ID anyone can spoof.
- Cost: SMS is priced per message. WhatsApp is priced per 24-hour conversation — ten messages inside one window cost the same as one.
This is where most calculations go wrong: comparing the price of one SMS to the price of a WhatsApp conversation. The correct comparison is per resolved case, not per message.
When SMS is still better
- Weak-connectivity areas or an older customer base.
- Critical alerts that must arrive even when the phone is offline.
- OTP fallback when WhatsApp does not deliver — the best use of both together, as covered on the verification codes page.
When WhatsApp is clearly ahead
- Anything needing a reply — appointment confirmations, enquiries, order follow-ups.
- Visual content — product photos, invoices, shipping labels.
- Customer service — because it is a continuous thread, not isolated messages.
- Campaigns to an opted-in audience using approved templates.
The conclusion: not “either/or”
What works in practice: WhatsApp as the primary channel, SMS as the safety net for whatever does not arrive. The important part is having both in the same inbox — a customer replying by SMS and one replying on WhatsApp should reach your team in one place, not two systems.
And if you are still comparing the regular WhatsApp app to the API, start with this comparison.
